THEIR STORY
Sapphire & Sage is a family-owned metaphysical boutique on Gallatin Pike in Nashville with over 5,000 five-star reviews and a loyal community built through TikTok Shop and their physical storefront. The brand makes everything by hand: ritual candles, crystal-infused perfume rollers, cleansing sprays, and curated gift sets, all rooted in genuine craft and a direct relationship with their customer.
Among their product lineup, one item stood apart for its retail potential: the Crystal Bookmark. A 16-inch ribbon bookmark featuring a genuine gemstone, packaged with affirmation cards and available in ten stones, including amethyst, rose quartz, black obsidian, and green aventurine. At $15, beautifully packaged, and with built-in gifting appeal, it was a product that practically belonged in a bookstore. The question was how to get it there.
THE CHALLENGE
The Crystal Bookmark was the right product for Barnes & Noble before the pitch ever started. A genuine gemstone, retail-ready packaging, an accessible price point, and a natural connection to the book-buying customer. On paper, the fit was obvious. In practice, getting a small Nashville brand in front of Barnes & Noble’s buying team, and making a case compelling enough to earn a nationwide rollout, is a different challenge entirely.
Independent gift and accessory brands are pitched to major book retailers constantly. Buyers are looking for products that move at checkout, photograph well on a shelf display, and come from a vendor who can actually execute on volume. Sapphire & Sage had the product. They needed the infrastructure and relationships to back it up.
THE SOLUTION
We identified the Crystal Bookmark as the lead product for the Barnes & Noble pitch from the start. The retail logic was clean: bookstore customers buy gifts, they respond to wellness and intentionality, and a $15 crystal bookmark with affirmation cards is an easy add-on purchase for someone who just spent $30 on a novel. We built the category argument around that customer behavior and the product’s gifting mechanics, not just its aesthetic.
We facilitated direct introductions to Barnes & Noble’s buying team and led the presentation. The pitch centered on the product’s price-to-perceived-value ratio, its variety across 10 gemstone options which allows for strong visual merchandising on a display, and the brand’s existing sell-through proof from TikTok Shop and their own storefront. We gave the buyer a complete picture: great product, proven demand, vendor who can deliver.
On the operational side, we guided the Sapphire & Sage team through Barnes & Noble’s compliance requirements and ensured packaging, barcoding, and logistics were all dialed in for a 700+ store rollout. When the purchase order landed, the brand was ready to fulfill it.
THE RESULTS
Barnes & Noble placed a $250,000 opening order, rolling the Sapphire & Sage Crystal Bookmark out across more than 700 stores nationwide. A handmade product from a Nashville boutique is now sitting at checkout counters and gift displays in bookstores across the country, in front of exactly the customer it was made for.
